
It was 1985 and the election of the new director general of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) was the topic of the day.
Dr. Peter Onu from Nigeria, was the highly recommended candidate for the position. In the heat of elections however, Nigerian head of state Muhammadu Buhari refused to support Peter Onu. Instead, he supported Ide Oumarou, who was notably a Fulani man from Niger republic.
Of course, Peter Onu lost the election. It was the first time ever that a president ever campaigned against his own country, in the history of international affairs. It was a shock to the entire world
