Island of dolls.

The island of dolls located in Xochimilco, south of the center of Mexico City very close to the Estadio Azteca football stadium was originally owned by Don Julian Santana Barrera.

It is filled with dolls hanging from trees and buildings covered with cobwebs and insects.

This place was named in the 1950’s when the owner began to hang the dolls as a sign of protection against evil spirits.

According to legend, a young girl had drowned entangled among the lilies of the canal and her body was found on the banks of the Santampa chinampas(a floating island in a shallow lake bed).

Don Julian began to experience unexplainable occurrences, he became terrified and placed dolls that he found in the garbage or in the canals with the thought that they would scare the soul of the young girl away.

The young girl was believed to always cry out: “I want my doll”.

He once found a doll floating nearby and assumed it belonged to the deceased girl, he then hung it from a tree as a sign of respect.

These dolls are still present in the island till date.

According to legend, Don Julian died very close to the area where the little girl allegedly died.
