Most of us know the Late Professor Chinua Achebe as the author of the record breaking novel: Things Fall Apart.
Things Fall Apart arguably holds the record for the most popular and most widely read novel in Africa.
On the other hand, we know 50Cent as an American rapper who has thrilled the world with his music.
In 2011, American rapper 50cent was about to release a movie drama titled “Things Fall Apart”.
He was approached by Chinua Achebe’s lawyers and they clearly stated that the title of the movie would suggest a clear attempt at plagiarizing Achebe’s work.
In a bid to end the argument, 50 Cent offered to pay 1 Million US Dollars to Achebe in order to have rights to the title.
Surprisingly, Achebe felt seriously insulted. Even Achebe’s lawyers were said to remind 50 Cent that Achebe’s book was even written over 17 years before he (50 Cent) was born.
To make matters more interesting, Professor Chinua Achebe even stated that he wouldn’t sell rights to his work, even for 1 Billion US Dollars!
At the end of the day, Achebe won the argument and 50 Cent had to switch the title of his movie from “Things Fall Apart”, to “All Things Fall Apart”.
Wow… Nice legal procedures there is in the things of copyrights
